Text4baby: Parenting Guide On The Go

Posted February 25, 2013 by Astrid in MatriPuntos

As a mother, I am far from being perfect.

My first child was born at 31 weeks. Why? I will probably never know, I had a healthy pregnancy, I am not a drinker neither a smoker. My sugar level was normal as well as my blood pressure. I wasn’t overweight nor had any complications at all. I was a really fit mom.Not even my doctor could explain why I had a pre term baby. Five  Text BFyears have passed since my first pregnancy and the number of pre term babies are still on the rise. 500,000 or one in nine babies are born prematurely every year and medical experts cannot fully explain why the U.S. has so many pre-term births.

Last year when I found out I was pregnant again, I started to get informed in every aspect of the process. I signed up for Text4baby, a service that sends free text messages to women who are pregnant or whose babies are less than a year old, providing them with information, and reminders, to improve their health and the health of their babies.

Text4baby makes sure pregnant women pay attention to their nutrition, avoid cigarettes and alcohol, control blood pressure and diabetes, watch for infections, get flu shots and make regular prenatal doctor visits. Text4baby messages also connect women to public clinics and support services for prenatal and infant care.

As a mother I am committed to my babies health and I loved being reminded on a weekly basis about the status of my babies. My second child, Lia is now 6 months old and I still find those weekly alerts very useful.

To participate, women send a text message with the word “baby” to the number 511411; Spanish speakers can text “bebe” to that same number to receive tips in that language. Messages are sent three times a week, with tips timed according to a woman’s delivery date. Isn’t that awesome!!!
