Isabel Toledo: “I am a Latina, I Find Hispanic Women Very Empowered”

As the Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off, we have decided to highlight the Latinas that are shaping the fashion industry… not just in United States but in the world.

Latinas are a hot trend now… and Isabel Toledo in fashion is one of the hottest designers in the market.

It is not a secret that Isabel Toledo is at the top of  Michelle Obama’s fashion designer list. Beside her famous clothing line, Isabel has her own shoe line available at Payless ShoeSource.

Isabel  and her husband Ruben are one of the most successful latino couple in the fashion industry. Ruben, an artist and illustrator, is her collaborator and in each one of their  pieces you could see a glimpse of where they came from: CUBA

ABOUT BEING LATINA: 

“I am a Latina, I find Hispanic women very empowered,” she said. “They are individualistic, not a clan. The Latin woman likes to stand out.”

“Everybody is so open into accepting latinos, Spanish food, Spanish thinking & Spanish words,” added Ruben. “Ah y la salsa, el ritmo de la salsa de nosotros,” commented Isabel. 

ABOUT BEING FIRST LADY’S FASHION DESIGNER:

“It is an honor because she has been amazing for me as part of a platform, it has given me the ability to do things like this. I am honored that she loves my work; she has been a client for a long time, she is a beautiful woman, she is very open,she loves fashion, she loves to express herself with fashion. She is fearless, said Isabel. “You have to be brave to wear certain trends.”

ABOUT ON HOW BEING LATINA INFLUENCED HER DESIGNS:

“Es una parte de mi que no te puedo decir como” is in the blood. You can separated it , I cannot stand back and say I am not going to be very latina this time… when you are, you are and that is something that you see in every work I have done. How I do it I do not know but it is part of my DNA,” confessed Isabel.

ABOUT ON HOW THE COUPLE KEEP THEIR “HISPANIDAD”:

“Yo cocino comida latina, more than anything. Muchas pasiones comienzan por la cocina,” expressed Isabel. “My favorite are arroz con frijoles y una buena sopa.” “Hace unos frijoles negros como nadie,” interrumpe Ruben. “I die for her black beans.”
