Healthy Students are Better Learners

Healthy Students are Better Learners

I am working with Florida KidCare campaign that will help me help others, however the opinions are my own.

One of the girls that I mentor has a 14-year old neighbor called Alberto. He heard her talking about how all of us get together and share the good, the bad and the ugly about life.  Alberto asked to be invited to share his life stories with us sometime.

Here is why:
A couple of months ago, a few of the kids helped me move some furniture to my storage.  Alberto was one of the first kids that offered to help. However, I noticed that he was willing to assist, but had a hard time staying on task. Alberto would get distracted looking at stuff that I had in my storage.  Therefore, I found myself giving him instructions to do the same task several times.

Last week, I asked Alberto how he was doing in school. He replied that he was not doing too well. When I spoke to Alberto’s father about his situation, he told me that Alberto’s teacher had sent a note home highlight his struggles in class and with school work.

I spoke to a friend who is a psychiatrist and he mentioned the possibility of Alberto suffering from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). The doctor went on to explain that first Alberto has to be diagnosed before determining the right therapy and treatment for him. The doctor stated that ADD or ADHD could have an impact on Alberto having difficulty focusing in class and that he could struggle academically as a result.

I spoke to Alberto’s father again and shared the conversation I had with the doctor. When I suggested that Alberto be seen by a physician, he indicated that their family didn’t have insurance.

Immediately I told him about and explained that health and academics are strongly related. Educationally relevant health disparities influence student motivation and ability to learn. This is why it is very important that our kids are in top physical and mental health.

This is why I am so glad to know about Florida KidCare. Sometimes we don’t understand just how important it is to look a bit deeper at what some people will refer to as an annoying child, when in reality this child might be suffering from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). A healthy kid is a better and more focused student.

Health and academic performance are strongly related. Make sure your child is ready to learn and achieve this year with head to toe health coverage!
